What to expect
Your first appointment is a psychiatric evaluation lasting roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Your provider reviews your symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, medications, sleep, substance use, family history and goals. Together you will agree on a diagnosis where one applies and build a treatment plan, which may include medication, supportive therapy, labs or a referral for longer-term counseling.
Follow-up visits usually run 15 to 30 minutes and focus on how treatment is working, side effects, and adjustments. Most patients are seen every two to four weeks at first, then less often as things stabilize.
What to bring
- Photo ID and your insurance card
- A list of current medications, doses and supplements
- Names and contact details of other treating providers
- Any prior psychiatric records, testing or hospital discharge papers
- For patients under 18: a parent or legal guardian
- Questions you want answered — bring them written down
